#EarthDay: How we do it at Yahoo

Practical tips that will help reduce carbon footprint

MANILA, Philippines - Happy Earth Day everyone! Today is my first Earth Day with Yahoo Philippines, and it is truly a fulfilling one. :)

At the beginning of the month, we started posting daily #EarthDay tips on our social media accounts. Our marketing team from Singapore -- Brenda Bey and Peggy Zhu -- extended their support by doing our layout and eventually helping us post and monitoring engagement.

Other countries in the region joined the campaign by translating tips I came up with into their own language, and sharing them with their readers and communities, too.

I have never felt this much support for one passion I have which is reducing carbon footprint, living simply and sustainably, and -- in the process -- saving the planet for the children.

I am grateful to my boss, Kate delos Reyes, for teaching me how to work with the rest of the teams in the region. Thank you also to Kim Patria, our news reporter (and resident heartbreaker), for teaching me how to do layouts in Photoshop. :)

How fitting that, on #EarthDay, good vibes are all around. I am sharing with you the tips we shared in Yahoo Philippines. Feel free to share them with your friends and family, too!

5 ways to get started with color blocking

FRESH AS A FLOWER. Color blocking keeps you looking polished from day to night, the same effect of an all-black ensemble. Photo from the Marks and Spencer Spring 2014 collection courtesy of Visions and Expressions

Easy tips on how to wear color without going overboard

MANILA, Philippines - I love colors, whether they are in solids, prints, pastels, or other new pantones
available. Colors allow us to blend in or stand out, to express how we feel or to help us channel an emotion we want to feel (yes, I am a believer in color therapy).

Color blocking in fashion is a way of styling oneself using colors that still allows us to look prim, proper, and polished while allowing us to express or share our favorite color of the season.

Sounds complicated? It's not. If you've yet to try color-blocking your wardrobe (It's summer! take advantage of the colorful vibe!), here are 5 simple ways to get you started:

1. Pair color with denim
Chambray is a classic summer trend, and can neutralize or soften any loud color. Think of how your favorite red top always looks good with denim. Now replace that red top with another color, and another, and another. Don't stop!

2. Pair color with black
If you want to color block at work but don't want to stick out like a sore thumb in a sea of blacks, navy blues, grays, and whites, then wear a colorful piece with a black piece, and use black accessories (including shoes). This works when you have a presentation and want all eyes on you.

3. Go monochromatic
Wearing monochromatic from head to toe subdues the impact of colors, especially if you have bright pieces. This also makes you look slimmer. Wear accessories and shoes in the same color hue, or opt for neutrals like nude, champagne, gray, and beige.

4. Pair color with print
This is a great way to wear neon and acid brights. The print takes some of the attention away from the loud color, and adds more depth to your outfit. It is also an interesting touch. Again, with such a busy outfit, keep your shoes and accessories simple -- you wouldn't want to look like a clown!

5. Pair color with texture
Wear color in the evening or to more formal events by adding glitter -- literally and figuratively. Aside from pairing color pieces with embellished ones, you can also go for pieces that use different fabrics like leatherette, velvet, silk, or anything sheer. Use one statement accessory and you're good to go.

6. Don't forget pastels
Bold and bright colors liven the place, while pastels relax and cool you down. Pair pastels with each other, or wear them according to my first five tips, and you'll see your wardrobe expand to countless outfits. If you've invested in good accessories and footwear, all you have to do is mix and match.

DAY TO NIGHT. Color block your outfit and you won't need to change anymore if you want to hang out after work. Photo from the Marks and Spencer Spring 2014 collection courtesy of Visions and Expressions

The actress uses her acting prowess to channel a French cinema icon

MANILA, Philippines - After going topless in the Jimmy Choo Spring-Summer 2014 campaign, actress Nicole Kidman is back to show off her sultry side in a new campaign by the shoe brand titled, "Cruise."

"Cruise" works with the element of water, while the Spring-Summer 2014 campaign had more to do with earth.

Watch the campaign video:

Here's Nicole to tell us what happened behind the scenes:

Best of both worlds: iHOP pancakes and Pinoy breakfast

GIVE A HOP FOR BREAKFAST. Mornings are crucial to how the rest of your day will go. Start them right. Photos from Stratos

Breakfast -- no matter what you take -- can make or break your day

MANILA, Philippines - Mornings are such an important part of the day for me. They can spell how my day will go, set the tone. If I don't have a good morning, by lunchtime, I would already be thinking of ways on how to save my day.

Which is why breakfast is important for me, too. When I have breakfast, I normally have it by myself (not a talker in the morning) or, if I don't, I usually stay quiet and eat thoughtfully. I like enjoying every bite and appreciating every taste and texture of my food.

Call me weird, it's okay. :) I eat like that. How about you?

I talk about breakfast because I am thinking of iHOP, the all-day breakfast and pancake place that opened in the Philippines in March 2013, to much excitement from fans who loved going to their branches abroad.

iHOP Philippines turned one just last month. To celebrate, they introduced Pinoy breakfast favorites to their menu:

  • Savory Pork Longganisa
  • Breakfast Beef Tapa
  • Classic Chicken or Pork Tocino
  • Lean Chicken Sausage
Each dish comes complete with garlic rice, two eggs (cooked any style you want) with atchara (my favorite, especially if from Pampanga) and seasoned vinegar. They can also come with iHOP's trademark pancakes: Buttermilk Pancakes, Stuffed French Toast, or Brioche French Toast.

NOT WITHOUT PANCAKES! A sample of iHOP's Pinoy breakfast

“These Filipino breakfast favorites will be exclusively offered in the Philippines for a limited time,” said Archie Rodriguez, president and CEO of Global Restaurant Concepts, Inc. (GRCI), the company that brought iHOP, California Pizza Kitchen, Morelli's Gelato, and PF Chang's to the Philippines.

Now that it's summer, iHOP also ups the ante to comfort dining by introducing 4 new ice cream parfait flavors, made and co-created with Nestle Ice Cream.

They are:

MANGO PEACHES AND CREAM. Blend of mango and cheesecake ice cream

CHILDHOOD MEMORIES. Vanilla ice cream layered with strawberry and blueberry syrups, topped with crispy golden hash brown (HASH BROWN!) and cheesecake bits
MIZED BERRY. Chocolate ice cream smothered with strawberry and blueberry, drizzled with yogurt and finished with oatmeal on top
CHOCOLATE DECADENCE. iHOP's Butter Pecan Syrup, dark chocolate, white chocolate chips, maple candied bacon, chocolate ice cream
iHOP branches are at W Global Center in Bonifacio Global City, UP Town Center, Entertainment Mall of SM Mall of Asia, Century Mall, and Filinvest, Alabang. - #CoffeeWithKai

SWEET SUMMER. Amina Aranaz-Alunan with her Club Tropicana collection. Photography by Jory Rivera

My second pool party of the season :)

MANILA, Philippines - How do you combine partying with shopping and pampering?

Ask Amina Aranaz-Alunan, who threw the perfect one on a sunny Saturday afternoon last April 5.

The Club Tropicana pool party was the 4th in a string of events for the busy mom and entrepreneur: first there was Manila FAME at SMX, then there was the graduation show of School of Fashion and the Arts (SoFA, where Amina is founding partner and executive director), followed by Fashion Access Hong Kong 2014.

Summer trends: Visions of young Pinoy designers (Yahoo SHE)

Add to these the fact that Amina is a mother of three. If the film "I Don't Know How She Does It" (starring Sarah Jessica Parker) were a real-life story, Amina would be its star.

The pool party was the official launch of Club Tropicana, the Aranaz Spring-Summer 2014 collection. It was also the launch of Aranaz Beach Boutique, a pop-up online store that features other Filipino brands that Aranaz supports.

Aside from the yummy pica-pica, there was fresh juice courtesy of Jusa, and liquid nitrogen ice cream freshly-prepared courtesy of Kool Kids (owned by Amina's older brother, Miguel). And of course, since the party was meant to go beyond sundown, there was a bar serving refreshing drinks with Belvedere Vodka.

Shopping was a big part of the day: there was a booth were clients could customize their own Carrie bag (an Aranaz classic) and a trunk show version of the Aranaz Beach Boutique. At a corner of the trunk show was a comfy area for nail pampering.

Before Amina's guests started arriving, she sat down with me for a quick interview:

You are still remembered as a model; now you are a designer and a household name when it comes to Pinoy design and export. Remind us again how Aranaz started.
This [October] 2014, we’re celebrating our 15th year. It started when I was in college, because my mom has an export and manufacturing business. I grew up with the bag factory as my weekend place, my playground. When we were in college, my brother decided to try to sell some showroom samples. We were surprised that it was quite successful.

I also felt that I really wanted to create a brand that was accessible to the local market. I’d go to my mom’s factory and I would see designer brands in the factory. I was so sad that people didn’t know they were made in the Philippines.

I knew we could make the same quality, so I decided to start the Aranaz brand which is a Filipino brand. My primary focus back then was to cater to the Philippine market with export-quality handbags.

Was it easy to shift from modeling to designing?
I’d always wanted to be a designer. As a child, I was really very creative, and I enjoyed exploring creativity, so I knew that eventually that’s where I would end up. The fact that, somehow, I was in the industry also helped me reach out to people. They sort of had recall of who I was.

Modeling was really a side thing. I always knew that I wouldn’t do modeling as a career. It was really just something on the side

How do you balance your time between SoFA and Aranaz?
It’s very tricky. Very, very tricky.

In the past, especially when SoFA had just started, I had to sacrifice Aranaz because I knew that SoFA needed a lot of attention. This was in the first 5, 6 years of SoFA (now 7 years old). I really started focusing again on Aranaz in 2013, when I tried to penetrate the international market.

But now, I divide my time in half. In a week, I spend around 3 days in SoFA, two days in Aranaz. The following week, I’ll make it 3 days in Aranaz, two days in SoFA. I also work a lot remotely, wherever I am.

How about balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship?
I think, in a way, they go hand in hand. I’m lucky that I’m an entrepreneur because I handle my own schedule. It’s flexible. If I need to go to my children’s school, I can do it, because I don’t need to report to a 9-to-5 job.

I think it’s innate with entrepreneurship that there are no walls, in a way, between work and home.
Sometimes it’s good. Sometimes it’s bad. Those are things that I constantly struggle with. In fact, I made a conscious effort last year to really try to divide -- that when I’m home, I stop working. Before, it was non-stop.

I made a conscious effort to do that.
