WINNERS: Grammy Awards 2014

MUSIC'S BIGGEST NIGHT. Pharell Williams and Daft Punk accepting one of their many awards.
Photo from The GRAMMYs Facebook page

My first time to live blog for Yahoo! Philippines made for a fun and exciting morning

MANILA, Philippines - The 56th Grammy Awards (aka #Grammys) took place last January 26 (January 27, Philippine time) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Rapper and "NCIS: Los Angeles" star LL Cool J hosted the 3 and a half hour-long event. It was filled with unforgettable performances from The Beatles' Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Daft Punk and Stevie Wonder, and my favorite Macklemore and Ryan Lewis with Queen Latifah and Madonna.

Watch the amazing McCartney-Starr reunion here:

The night's big winners were Daft Punk and New Zealand wonder Lorde. Daft Punk brought home the awards for Album of the Year ("Random Access Memories"), Record of the Year ("Get Lucky" featuring Pharell Williams) and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for the same song.

Lorde took home the Song of the Year Award for her hit "Royals" and the Best Pop Solo Performance Award.

By this time, a lot of you already know that I joined Yahoo! Philippines last January 20 as Lifestyle and Entertainment Editor. I am still a freelancer, and I continue to write for Asian Dragon Magazine. I thank Yahoo! PH's Country Manager and Country Editor Kate Delos Reyes for allowing me to continue blogging, too.

Blogging "saved" me from the feeling of emptiness after I left Rappler in 2013. This is something I am committed to doing until I find the right reason to stop -- which, I hope, I never will. I take this chance to thank everyone who's been visiting my blog not only from the Philippines but also from the US and around the world. Your support overwhelms the newbie blogger in me. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Back to the Grammys: it was my first time to live blog/live tweet an event as a Yahoo! I teamed up with Lui Yanoria, Yahoo! PH OMG's resident boy wonder. It felt so great to know that Lui and I can work together and that he could keep up with my mad pace. Expect more from our tandem this year. :)

'Gravity' and 'American Hustle' sweep Critics' Choice

MOST AWARDED. "Gravity" takes home 7 Critics' Choice awards.
Image from the "Gravity" Facebook page
These movies went home with the most trophies tonight

MANILA, Philippines - The Critics' Choice Awards 2014 took place on January 16 (January 17, Philippine time) at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. Talk show host-actress Aisha Tyler of "The Talk" hosted the program.

I live blogged the event as it happened. Check out the backstage photos! :)

The event was more relaxed compared to the recent Golden Globe Awards, and took place hours after Oscar nominations were announced. Tom Hanks, star of "Captain Phillips," was not nominated for an Oscar.

This was given a "soft" protest at the Critics' Choice Awards, first by Tyler in her opening spiel ("I would not snub you, baby.") and by "American Hustle" writer and director David O. Russell who dedicated his Best Comedy award to Hanks, mentioning the actor's name 3 times. ("Argo" writer and director Ben Affleck had the same experience in 2013, when he was not nominated for an Oscar Best Director award yet was honored by other award-giving bodies.)

And the critics' choices for 2014 are:

BEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY: Leonardo DiCaprio – The Wolf of Wall Street
